His contributions to the sport of dogs, his leadership in breed clubs, and his dedication to supporting the community will be remembered by all who knew him.
Jeff’s passion for dogs was evident early on. As an active participant in the early days of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America (PBGVCA), he played a crucial role in the club’s formation. Jeff was instrumental in helping the breed achieve formal American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition in the United States. His kennel, Pepperhill, was home to some of the most influential PBGVs in the breed’s foundational years. Jeff’s deep love and understanding of the breed made him a key figure in its growth and development.
Beyond his work with PBGVs, Jeff was also a founding member and board member of Take The Lead, a nonprofit organization that provides financial support to individuals in the sport of purebred dogs who are battling life-threatening illnesses. Jeff’s commitment to this cause showed his compassionate nature and his desire to support those in need. His leadership and involvement with Take The Lead made a significant difference in the lives of many.
Despite battling illness for some time, Jeff continued to remain involved in the dog community. His passing, though expected by some, still feels sudden to those who loved him. Many recall his courage, strength, and unwavering dedication, even in the face of adversity. His friends, colleagues, and family are heartbroken, but they know that his legacy will live on through the countless people he touched.
Jeff’s knowledge of Golden Retrievers was extensive, and he was widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable supporters of the breed in America. As a judge, his expertise was admired by many, and he was known for his fairness and passion in the ring. One friend recalls the honor of having Jeff acknowledge her dog, Lucy, on the world’s biggest stage. Jeff’s enthusiasm for dogs and dog shows was infectious, and he always loved to talk about the breeds he held dear.
But dogs weren’t Jeff’s only passion. He was also an avid traveler, particularly fond of Africa. Those who knew him well would often hear him speak of his African safaris, which left a lasting impact on him.
