HOUSTON – A shocking and disturbing case has emerged from a Houston funeral home, where a 34-year-old embalmer has been charged with abusing the corpse of a registered sex offender. Amber Paige Laudermilk, an employee at Claire Brothers Funeral Home, is accused of stabbing, castrating, and carrying out additional abuses on the body of 58-year-old Charles Roy Rodriguez in early February. The alleged acts occurred in the presence of an embalming student, according to Harris County officials.
Laudermilk now faces a felony charge for abuse of a corpse, a crime that has left the community grappling with complex emotions. The incident came to light after an affidavit revealed that Laudermilk allegedly instructed coworkers who knew about the abuse to remain silent. Those coworkers later admitted they were too scared to report the incident.
Charles Roy Rodriguez, the deceased, was a registered sex offender. According to Harris County Precinct One Constable Alan Rosen, Rodriguez had been charged with sexual assault in 2001 and received 10 years of deferred adjudication. He died of natural causes at a Houston hospital in January, and his body was brought to Claire Brothers Funeral Home for preparation.
“This case is about two troubled people: the victim who was a registered sex offender and the defendant, who is accused of viciously attacking his dead body,” Rosen said. “No matter what one thinks of his life, the law requires that he be treated with dignity in death.”
The constable’s office emphasized that while Rodriguez’s past may evoke strong feelings, the law mandates respect for the deceased. Rosen also expressed empathy for victims of sexual assault and their families, acknowledging the pain such crimes inflict.
“I don’t know the suspect’s past, but we have the utmost empathy for anyone who has been the victim of a sexual assault or is the family or friend of someone who has been the victim of a sexual assault,” Rosen said. “The facts clearly indicate she was angry, and I hope after this is resolved in the courts, she gets the help she needs.”
The Texas Funeral Service Commission referred the case to Rosen’s office for further investigation, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations. Funeral homes are places where families expect their loved ones to be treated with care and respect, making the accusations against Laudermilk particularly unsettling.
